Self-Help Materials: How to Calculate Grade Point Average

Grade Point Average Terms :

Credit hours - the number of credit hours a course is worth. This number is listed in both the semester course schedule and Potomac State College catalog and is typically 1-4 hours.

 

Grade value - numerical value assigned to one credit hour of a grade: A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 point, and F=0 points.

 

Grade points - number of credit hours a course is worth multiplied by the grade value.

 

Grade hours - credit hours for which you earn a grade of F, D, C, B, A and P. Withdrew or incomplete do not count.

 

Earned hours - credit hours for which you earned a grade of D, C, B, A and P.

 

Step-by-Step Instructions to Calculate Grade Point Average :

  1. Multiply the grade value of the course by the semester hours for that course. This is the grade points.
  2. Divide the total number of grade points by the total grade point average hours.

 

Why is your grade point average important ?

  1. Academic probation is for students who fail to earn a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
