Work and Life Experiences Can Help Earn You a College Degree
Potomac State College of West Virginia University (WVU) is now offering an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Technical Studies: General, more often referred to as a “Flex Degree.” This versatile two-year degree allows individuals to earn credit for:
- Work experiences
- Life experiences
- Military training
- Business and industry training
- Nationally recognized certifications and licenses
Credit for Life Experiences will be determined by:
- The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)
- Among other tests
Credit for Military, Business and Industry Experiences will be determined by:
- The American Council on Education (ACE)
- The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process
Credit for Nationally Recognized Certifications and Licenses:
- National Incident Management System (NIMS)
- Commercial and Industrial Security Corporation (CISCO)
- Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC)
- Among others
Students who can demonstrate learning through experience, which is not otherwise verified by tests, licensure or certificates, will be expected to enroll in a course designed to assist them to develop a portfolio with appropriate documentation of relevant academic competencies and skills. The course will incorporate guidelines within its syllabus that are in agreement with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and will count as an elective in the program.
1.) Individuals must have earned a high school diploma or passed the GED or TASC tests.
2.) Apply for admission.
3.) Gather required documentation for life experiences, military training, or business training.
4.) Each individual will be assigned a faculty advisor who will assist them in assessment of their academic status and requirements needed for completion of the Flex Degree

The two-year Flex Degree is designed to allow individuals to pursue a four-year degree if you want. This degree will align with Potomac State’s upcoming Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) Technical Studies: General Degree.
