About the Program: 

Designing an advertising campaign. Marketing via Twitter. Promoting your favorite nonprofit. Writing radio and television ads.  Shaping public perception. Planning events.

Do these activities appeal to you? Then a Strategic Communications major may be for you! Students at Potomac State College have the opportunity to prepare for the fields of advertising and public relations with an AA in Journalism and a major in Strategic Communications.

After completing an AA degree, you can switch campuses to Morgantown,  or transfer to another college, to complete a four-year degree.

At Potomac State, students enjoy a variety of classes, such as   . . . ..  In Tools and Applications, students learn the basics of photography and how to edit photos and videos using Adobe CC programs.  In this hands-on class, students also produce a 360 video. Their work is published on a blog and in the college online and print newspaper, the Pasquino.

In Media Writing, students write articles for publication the Pasquino. They also learn to write press releases, blogs, and online articles.

WKYW–LP a.k.a. “Mountain Streams Radio,”  inpartnership with Potomac State College and the Mineral County Historical Society, broadcasts directly from the Potomac State College campus. The station offers a broad mix of Appalachian music and information for Mineral County. Students have the opportunity to get involved by writing and producing radio segments.

Academic advising, tutoring, computer lab time, individual attention and small-class size characterize the program.  Amber Butcher, advisor and unit coordinator, works one-on-one with students to place them in summer internships and part-time jobs. She also works individually with students to ensure academic success.

Career Options: 
Graduates with a four-year degree can find work in advertising and public relations agencies, corporate communications, the sports industry, nonprofit organizations, private companies, and the government.
