Volleyball: Potomac State wins Region XX title; heads to Nationals
Potomac State defeated Hagerstown on Sunday to win the Region XX, Division II volleyball championship for the first time in school history, earning a trip to the national tournament later this month. HAGERSTOWN, MD — Tournament MVP Anya Murray had 23 kills and 21 digs for the weekend, and Brittney Hozdic and Shayla Hillian were named to the all-tournament team as Potomac State swept Hagerstown Community College to win the Region XX, Division II volleyball championship Sunday at Hagerstown.
The region championship was the first in volleyball in school history and sends coach Martha Ganoe’s team to the national tournament in two weeks. This year’s tournament will be held at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia Nov. 17-19.
The Catamounts, unbeaten against Region XX teams and 22-6 overall, were the top seed in the regional and had a first-round bye. They defeated fifth-seeded Garrett 25-11, 25-12, 25-15 in Saturday’s semifinal, and beat second-seeded Hagerstown in three close games in Sunday’s final, 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.
Murray had 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks, Hozdic 13 kills and five blocks and Hillian four kills, four blocks and six digs in the championship match.
Ericka Gordon added nine kills and 18 digs, Sarah Lowery had four kills, 10 digs and two blocks, Bailey Godlove 32 assists and five digs, and Makaleigh Roberts a season high 22 digs.
“We had some excellent rallies, with strong play on both sides,” Ganoe said of the region final. “I think we won most of the long rallies, which were key, turning points in the match.
“Skylar Barbe had three crucial digs off great hits that kept us in the game. Shayla and Brittany were phenomenal blocking today,” Ganoe continued. “Anya played great and was playing a little out of position this weekend because Skylar has had to miss some time with an injury.
“Our libero, Makaleigh Roberts, had a season high 22 digs, and Bailey Godlove was outstanding, too. All the kids came through and played extremely good volleyball today. They played determined and as a team.”
In the semifinal win over Garrett, Murray had 11 kills and 14 digs, Gordon 11 kills and Hillian seven kills, four blocks and four aces. Hozdic added six kills and three blocks, Lowery had four kills and three blocks, Godlove 34 assists and four digs, and Roberts 14 digs.
The 22 wins are the most for a Potomac State team since 2013. This year’s team went 15-0 against Region XX opponents.
The Potomac State team has a number of former high school area standouts, including Murray (Allegany), Godlove, Lowery and Barbe (Fort Hill), and Gordon and Amber Hott (Hampshire), Sarah Whiteman and Jessi Dayton (Frankfort). Roberts is from Hedgesville and Hozdic from Jefferson.
